All Lies: In Brief

  • All Lies is Alan Ayckbourn's 86th play.
  • All Lies was written during the Covid pandemic of 2020 / 2021 and was conceived to be premiered in the end-stage McCarthy auditorium at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough. However, the venue declined the play.
  • The world premiere - directed by Alan Ayckbourn - took place at The Old Laundry Theatre, Bowness-on-Windermere, on 6 May 2022.
  • All Lies was the fifth of Alan's full-length plays to have not premiered in Scarborough and the first in 35 years; previously Alan opened A Small Family Business at the National Theatre in 1987. The other plays to have not premiered in Scarborough are Christmas V Mastermind & Mr Whatnot (Stoke-on-Trent) and Jeeves (London)
  • This marked the first time an Ayckbourn world premiere has taken place at The Old Laundry Theatre and marked only the second time Alan had directed a production specifically for this venue. Previously he directed By Jeeves in 2017 at The Old Laundry Theatre. The world premiere production was part of The Old Laundry Theatre's 30th anniversary celebrations.
  • All Lies later transferred to the Esk Valley Theatre, Glaisdale, near Whitby; this marked the first time an Ayckbourn world premiere production had been performed at the venue.
  • All Lies is considered one of Alan Ayckbourn's end-stage plays; plays written specifically for end-stage production (although several of them have gone on to be produced in the round). The other plays are: Bedroom Farce, Haunting Julia, A Small Family Business, Things We Do For Love and Virtual Reality. Although Jeeves and House were originally performed as end-stage plays, unlike the other plays they were not specifically written for end-stage performance.
